Modernism was both European (Picasso, Klee, Gaudi, Satie, etc.) and American. The American Modernists were especially interested in modern cities and the buildings and machines etc. inside cities.

Below are two short scenes from Charlie Chaplin's classic Modernist movie Modern Times (1936). It's Modernism because the movie is about modern life in cities. And movies were a new form of art then!
Also, below is a link to the WHOLE 110-minute Charlie Chaplin movie The Circus (1928). After the first five minutes, the movie becomes VERY funny. It's also a Modernist movie because 1) movies were a new art form in the early 20th Century and 2) circuses were a form of entertainment for city people.
Finally, it is a SILENT movie, so it's easy for you to watch by reading the few subtitles in English.
